Art Gallery Visit 2

Step 1: The Exhibition

Questions about the exhibit:
1. What is the title of the exhibit? Works by Clayton Richard

2. What is the theme of the exhibition? Oil Paintings

Step 2: The Gallery

Questions about the physical space:
1. What type of lighting is used? Lining the walls were track lighting which led to a perfect environment where the lights weren't too bright and not to dark.

2. What colors are used on the walls?  The color used on the walls were white and had a very modern feel.

3. What materials are used in the interior artchitecture of the space?  Even though the walls were simple & white there were small vases filled with seasonal flowers where the exhibition was loacted.

4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space? It was a very decent size space that I would say and all viewers were able to take in the different illustrations with a comfortable amount of space.

Step 3: The Artwork

 Questions about the artwork:
1. How are the artworks organized?  The artworks were neatly hung on the walls close together but not to close.  The works were also alined so it was comfortable from whichever angle you were at.

2. How are the artworks similar?  The artworks were similar in the way that the artist used such detailed use of the oil paintings, and the detail in general was evident in each of the images.  Each of the different illustrations had such rhythm.

3. How are the artworks different? The artworks were different because they each had different concepts & themes in them.

4. How are the artworks framed? The artworks were framed in different frames for each.  Some were in thick and some were thin.

5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?  The artworks were labeled with small labels
with the different titles.

6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other? I would say that they were about five to eight inches apart from each other.

 Trickle

This painting was one of my favorites that I had seen the last time that I was at the gallery.  Rickard has such a special talent in which he is able to use oil paints to create this wonderful painting.  His vivid use of the oil paints carried throughout the painting.  The use of the element rhythm showed through at the water trickled down the mountain.

 Singer Road Looking East

Singer Road Looking East was my favorite painting of the exhibit.  One of the many reasons is because I actually am fimiliar with this road- which creates a different view of the painting than the others.  He was able to use such real life like colors.  I could see myself walking up a similar house driveway and  living in the country this is what it looks like when and after it snows on a cold wintery day.  The painting in a way really brings you in to it.

Video Reviews

1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I selected these four following videos; Dada and Surrealism, Expressionism, Matisse and Picasso, and the Impact of Cubism.  I selected each of these specifics concepts because I wanted to learn more about each of them.  I have never really been familiar with Dada & Surrealism or the Impact of Cubism and I thought it would be interesting to learn more about each of them.  One of my favorite artists is Picasso so I thought it would be intriguing to learn more about him and his background.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Dada and Surrealism- this video discussed Dada’s transition to surrealism in Europe.  It showed detailed illustrations from various artists that represented the different transitions.

Expressionism- the concepts that were discussed in this video pertained to expressionism and also and fauvism.  One of expressionism main concepts pertained to how the artists performed this style with use of vibrant colors and expressed themselves emotionally.

Matisse and Picasso-this was once of my favorite videos.  The concept discussed in this video was both of these artists and the different types of work that they have created.  Also the video discussed how the two correlated together.

Impact of Cubism- this video discussed the different types of works artists creating during these time and have what they considered to be "nontradional" values were potrayed in their work.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The reading relate to the text by expanding on the different concepts that we had reviewed in more depth.  Sometimes in the videos they even discuss some of the same different types of artwork that we have discussed in the book already.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

Each of the films I choose because they were the ones that I found most interest in the topics.  I was introduced to new forms of artwork and detailed explanations about where they derived from.  In the book we are only able to learn so much about each artist and topic but after reviewing the videos it truly does give you a more informative explanation about what each is about.

Mask Making

1. Upload the three (3) inspiration images to your Blog (or link to your Photobucket account). Explain why you selected the inspiration pieces.

I selected each of the masks that are shown below for different reasons.  I selected the first "masks" because  the beauty of them really  caught my eye.  The vibrant use of the colors, and the intricate detail is memorizing. The second masks I came across while research for different masks that insprired me was this Venetian masks I came across. It was just as beautiful as the first set of masks that I found, but it provoked a certain emotion.  It made me wonder, what was the creator trying to get a across with the facial expression?  The masks seemed like it had a sly smile in a sense the way its lips were puckered. The last mask that I had found that had sparked my interest was a mask that had an African inspiritation.  It was simple but unique in its own way.

2. Include the analysis and description (art criticism steps) of the three (3) inspiration pieces.

The first set of masks were inspired by Western African inspiration.  They were used in tribal ceromonies in which the people express moral as well as important social and religions values for the community.  The second inspirational piece shown had an Ventian inspiration and was created out of paper mache.- Neat! "Fang" which is the third mask that had sparked my interest as mentioned above had an African decent.  It was created out of wood and was used for the ngil cermonies which aided in the search for socerors.

3. Upload images of your sketches and finished piece.

4. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask.

How I was able to incorporate different elements and principles into my finished mask was using mainly the techniques that I had observed from the other masks that I had researched.  I focused on the balance, form, line, and texture.

5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.

I am not impressed with my finished mask because I feel that if I had a better ability in creating one, my thoughts truly could have been represented in my creation.  I thought creating the mask itself was quite neat.  Typically in many of my classes you are not really able to express yourself in the way we are able to in Fundamentals of Art class.

Video Reviews

Questions and Topics for Your Blog Posting:
1. Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I choose the following videos because each of them had sparked my interest more than the others.  I did not have a full understanding of each of the concepts and I was hoping that the videos would improve that.  The videos I selected were Buddhism, Hinduism, African Art, and Chinese Art.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Buddhism- This video is the most interesting to me out of the four.  It discussed mainly the art & architecture that Buddhist creates which was fascinating.

Hinduism- This video also discussed the art & architecture of the Hinduism religion.  The video
showed many examples of the types of art & architecture that they create and bit of background of the religion.

African Art-This video described the different characteristics of the lives of persons during this time.  The video informed the viewer of the different types of religious beliefs that were followed for instance like rituals, and art created.

Chinese Art-This video showed numerous different types of Chinese art.-Wow!  Throughout the pieces you can see how the Chinese way of life has changed over the years.

3.. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate to the readings in the text by explaining more in-depth details about what we have currently have been learning.  By explaining the concepts of the chapter and characteristics of the different religions I have gain a better understanding of each of them.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I actually enjoyed each of the films this time.  Before in the video reviews that we have done a couple of the videos hadn’t sparked my interest.  Each of the videos I chose I wanted to learn more about the concepts and I did.  They were incredible informative as mentioned before, and I believe I have a better insight of the concepts now.

Art Exploration Drawings

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
I thought it was interesting using my hand as the main focal point of the drawing.  I have never really used it as the subject before- and I didn’t believe I did to well.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I used pencil to draw my hand.  The reason why I did is because it was the closets media I had to me while I was creating my piece on break at work.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
It was uncomfortable to draw with my non-dominant hand.  I believe the only reason why it was uncomfortable is because I am not used to using that hand.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?

I personally did not think that they were successful studies.  They are not my best pieces of art work that I have created, but hopefully not my worst.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
No.
