Week Fifteen- Art Gallery Visit #3: Self-Portraits Art Making/Material Exploration Blog

Create a reflection journal on your Blog and answer the following questions:

1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces?

I selected each of my inspiration pieces because one actually inspired my self portrait and the others because  I found them to be interesting.  Emily Johnson illustration of herself really helped me with creating my own self portrait.  Patricia Perry's recreation of the photo about the IRA solider was beautiful and captivating during that time frame.  The third piece of work that inspired me was Stella Robinsons self portrait of herself.  She showed herself bending over putting beans into a bag, and sending it off with a customer.  Her face was painted with such warm colors to match the personality of the artist.

2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?

I selected the idea that I did to create my self-portrait because I felt that it was the best way in which I could try to represent my self portrait.  I believe that if I used oil paint, acrylic paint or anything similar I do not feel I have the right experience to represent what I was trying to do so.

3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them?

I believe that my biggest issue was the fact that I feel that I cannot draw well.  I thought that creating the reflection of my self portrait I had taken a picture of and creating it on paper would be easy, but it was not.  I re did the portrait a couple of times but my finished product was the best that I was able to do.

4. How does this piece represent you?

I believe that piece represents me because I am a very happy, genuine person.  The rosy cheeks, kind eyes, and happy smile fits my personality perfectly!  This was my inspiration from the self portraits that I had captured and how the artist was either reflecting on themselves or another.

5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?

I used the elements and principles of line and texture which I had observed in the self portraits that I had captured from the gallery.

6. Did you enjoy working on this project?

Yes, I did enjoy working on this project. I thought it was actually quite interesting to be able to create a self portrait of myself and also explore other artists portraits at the Market Gallery.

7. What do you think of your final artwork?

I enjoyed my final piece of artwork, but I did not think that it was a good representation of myself.

This illustration of a self portrait I found to be the most interesting.  This was a picture that was taken and recreated by Patricia Perry, of Solider IRA Pettit.  The illustration was captured in black and white of the solider doing one of his proclaimed famous past times.

This illustration of the artists Emily Johnson own self portrait was on exhibit at the Market Street Art Gallery.  I thought it was a beautiful representation of herself and she seemed to be at peace.  This piece of art is where I had most of my inspiration for my creation.

This is a self portrait of Stella Robionson.  There is a connection between Stella and Emily which I found out through doing a bit of research at the gallery, they are grandmother and daughter.  It was so neat to see that both of the generations had such a amazing ability.

Course Content Blog

COURSE CONTENT
1. Which assignment did you ENJOY working on the best? Why?

There isn't one assignment per say that I enjoyed working on the best, I  genuinely enjoyed working on all of them besides the PowerPoint slide presentation.

2. Which assignment did you ENJOY working on the least? Why?

The assignment that I enjoyed working on was the most recent PowerPoint slide project in which we researched 25 different illustration to put together a exhibit.  The reason why I thought it was difficult is because I thought that if the project was more condensed, I might have spent more time finding the perfect pieces that reflected the theme.

3. How did you like using ANGEL?

I really like using ANGEL.  I believe that ANGEL is very user friendly, and is the perfect program for Buff State.

4. If you had the opportunity to change this course:
What would you keep? The professor.
What would you remove? The multiple assignments.
What would you add? Another gallery visit.

5. Would you recommend this course to your peers?

Yes!

6. Please list any other comments you would like to share.

I have no other comments.  I believe that the professor is the perfect professor for this class and I believe that she did a great job teaching it.

Reflection Blog of the Semester

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?

My expectations for this course was to understand the definition of art, and how artists create it.  My expectations were met, and exceeded through out this whole course.  I believe now that even though I am a terrible artist myself-I understand the meaning behind the illustration.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your initial posting?

Art is the individual form of self expression that the artist has whether it is implemented on a canvas, created in a sculpture, or whatever he or she desires for it to be.  I believe that when I had first posted what I thought art meant, I was very closed minded.  I didn't really understand what art was, or why someone created it.

3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?

Actually yes.  My favorite artist is Vincent van Gogh, and it still is after this course.  We were introduced to many different artists and learned about their backgrounds but he is still one of my favorites.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?

I love taken online courses.  Personally because my work schedule is so demanding, it allows for me to do what I need to during the day at work-then focus on my school work in the evening.

3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them?

The main challenge that I ran into with writing the critique article is which exhibit that I wanted to critique.  I seemed to find a liking to most of them, and only found minor details wrong with them.

4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work?

I feel that it is necessary to critique my peers work because I believe that in the future it will help them create a better finished product.

5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project?

Yes, as long as it is constructive criticism.

6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why?

I would rate my finished article between an 8-9.  I believe that I met all the requirements to the article that were required; it just may need a bit more tweeking.

7. Did you enjoy working on this project?

For the most part I did enjoy working on this project.  I do not personally like to critique others works and write about it but it was required for the project.

Greenberg on Pollock- This video discussed the interview between T.J. Clark and Clement Greenberg.  During this interview they discussed the life achievements of the artists Pollock.  Pollock was considered what one to believe an outcast but his works were some of the most simple.

An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance- this video discussed the different lives of the artists that when the concept of art criticism came about in the 16th century.  This video discussed how each of the artists came about creating their own works and the different selected images that represented the Renaissance age of art.

The Critics: Stories from the Inside Pages- This video discussed the topic regarding critics in the public and artistic community that Dr. Dwight Dewrth Pallmeyer discovered.  He discovered this information by form of interviewing other reviewers and film critics.  I thought this video was the most helpful relating to the topic because the Dr. looked at the overall picture of the critics work and the stories behind it and their lives.

The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non- Western Art and Culture- This video's main focus was about the 18th century World Fair which during its creation it was considered to be a festivity of different cultures.  The different works of art that were displayed at the fair came through and are presented at museums currently to represent these past times.

Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T.J. Clark in Conversation- This video discussed the different opinions between Michael Fried and T.J. Clark.  Michael Fried part of his conversation focused on his views of paintings & sculptures.  While on the other hand T.J. Clark focused on the actually history of art itself.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Criticism project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.

I do believe that most of the videos relate to the project because each of the videos show a different views & critiques from that specific person.  It shows how they critique them and why.

 3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of art criticism?

I enjoyed the different required films.  They added depth and understanding to the concept of art criticism and clarified most of my confusion on the topic.

Exhibit Slide Presentation

After doing a lot of research on different websites I came across a couple of different artists that were perfect for the exhibit.  The exhibit theme I choose was emotions.  The reason why I had chosen this theme is because it’s personally something that interests me and I think that would interest others.  I love too see what the artist is passionate about and why they paint what they paint.  As I have researched I have seen that many artists reflection their feelings and emotions in there pieces.  There was no specific order that I ordered my exhibit besides the main first couple of illustrations.  I put these ones that I thought fit the topic the best before I added the rest.  Also, I choose the text and colors because I thought the fitted the theme the best.  For a bright day a lot of artist would use different shades of bright colors, for a dark emotions the artist may use dark colors.

Blog Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art: The main concepts of this video followed the opionons of the artist Anthony Amussin.  It focused on the ideas of him and also the type of art which is called "lowbrow" art.

Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology:  This video discusses Native Americans cermonies and also how their bones were collected.  The cermonies are the part of the film that I thought to be most interesting because of the traditions that they have followed through out history.

George Eastman House: Picture Perfect:  This video focussed on the invention by George Eastman who created a inexpensive camera for inexperienced users. George was known for his many accomplishments in art, science, and also his creation of the camera.  One of the most interesting facts that I had found in the film was that he has thousands of different images that were captured by a camera which is on display in his home.

Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach: This video discussed the Musem of Modern Art.  I had discussed this movie in the answer to one of my post questions because in this video having things in a specific order was very important to this artists and this type of art.
2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.

I do believe that the films related to my art exhibition due to mainly how the exhbitions are set up in the galleries.  Personally I think the way that the different pieces of work are arranged adds a sense of depth in itself.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?

I had very positive thoughts of the recquired films that we had to watch.  They each added depth in their own different ways to the conepts that I had used in my curation project.  It really helped me better understand for the most part what we were doing.

Video Reviews

Explain why you selected each of the FOUR videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I selected each of the following videos for the same reasoning as prior- they seemed to be the most interesting to me. Hockney on Photography sparked my interest because I really seem to find an interest in photography as a whole because it is amazing to me what one can capture.  The other videos that I had choosen were ones that I wanted to learn about.

For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Abstract Expressionism & Pop-One of the main focuses in this video is how Abstract Expressionism was created and how it correlates with American & European art.  This video really interested me because I love all different types of this type of art.

Hockney on Photography- I choose this video because I seem to have a real liking for photography.  One of my favorite things about this video is that it let the viewer understand what the process actually contains & the process that goes behind creating the art.  This video per say didn’t relate to the chapter as much as the other but it did relate to others.

Isamu Noguchi: The sculpture of Spaces-One of the main focuses of this video was the artist Isamu Noguchi which specialized in sculptor.  It discussed part of Ismau Noguchi’s past that showed how his work is influenced.

Andy Warhol: Images of an Image-The main focus of the video is discussing who Andy Warhol is & what he is all about.  The discussed his creation of silk screening which once a design is created, ink is daubed onto the mesh. The ink is then pressed into the design with a squeegee, and the impression will be hung out to dry.  One of my favorite creations that Andy did was the Campbell's Soup design-that is so neat.

How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate to the readings in the text they discussed topics and even some of the artists that were discussed in the chapter.  The videos included much more in depth details about the subjects that we have discussed in the chapter.

Art Gallery Visit 2

Step 1: The Exhibition

Questions about the exhibit:
1. What is the title of the exhibit? Works by Clayton Richard

2. What is the theme of the exhibition? Oil Paintings

Step 2: The Gallery

Questions about the physical space:
1. What type of lighting is used? Lining the walls were track lighting which led to a perfect environment where the lights weren't too bright and not to dark.

2. What colors are used on the walls?  The color used on the walls were white and had a very modern feel.

3. What materials are used in the interior artchitecture of the space?  Even though the walls were simple & white there were small vases filled with seasonal flowers where the exhibition was loacted.

4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space? It was a very decent size space that I would say and all viewers were able to take in the different illustrations with a comfortable amount of space.

Step 3: The Artwork

 Questions about the artwork:
1. How are the artworks organized?  The artworks were neatly hung on the walls close together but not to close.  The works were also alined so it was comfortable from whichever angle you were at.

2. How are the artworks similar?  The artworks were similar in the way that the artist used such detailed use of the oil paintings, and the detail in general was evident in each of the images.  Each of the different illustrations had such rhythm.

3. How are the artworks different? The artworks were different because they each had different concepts & themes in them.

4. How are the artworks framed? The artworks were framed in different frames for each.  Some were in thick and some were thin.

5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?  The artworks were labeled with small labels
with the different titles.

6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other? I would say that they were about five to eight inches apart from each other.

 Trickle

This painting was one of my favorites that I had seen the last time that I was at the gallery.  Rickard has such a special talent in which he is able to use oil paints to create this wonderful painting.  His vivid use of the oil paints carried throughout the painting.  The use of the element rhythm showed through at the water trickled down the mountain.

 Singer Road Looking East

Singer Road Looking East was my favorite painting of the exhibit.  One of the many reasons is because I actually am fimiliar with this road- which creates a different view of the painting than the others.  He was able to use such real life like colors.  I could see myself walking up a similar house driveway and  living in the country this is what it looks like when and after it snows on a cold wintery day.  The painting in a way really brings you in to it.
